Puppet Kaos - where Kelvin Kao plays with puppets and tell random stories

Goodbye 2008, Hello 2009!

2008 was over and it’s now 2009! Let’s see what I wrote down on January 1st, 2008. I said that I would:

1) Keep the website running and updated: They say that an average blogger burn out after 6 months, and if they can keep going after 6 months, it will keep going for quite a while. I started doing serious posting in July 2007 so I’m around the 6 month point. We’ll see what happens.
2) Make a new header for this site (or at least try) that has pictures of puppets
3) Install the Comment Luv plug-in
4) Make more puppets (possibly learn how to use a sewing machine?)
5) Make some music for the videos instead of always use Creative Commons stuff

Did those things get done? Yes and no.

#1 was not hard. I am already way past that. So hooray for me and this blog.
#2 is still not done. The fact that my camera wasn’t working doesn’t help either. Actually, I can use my video camera for that, but I’ve been procrastinating… Now I’m waiting for the new lights to be set up before I do anything with it.
#3 was done and we still luv it.
#4 was not done so that shall be the goal this year. I’m pretty sure that it will get done this year, since I am planning to either add more characters or start a new project altogether.
#5 will be started once I figure out my computer’s sound issues.

2008 wasn’t that great of a year because there are a few things that certainly slowed me down and killed some momentum that I’ve built up. I’m not saying that nothing good happened. There are still quite a few good things, but hey, I always want more good and less bad stuff. So anyway, so long, 2008. I’ll see you later. (If time travel is ever invented, or if I ever meet a Time Lord.)

Usually I’m not one to make new year resolutions. And for the ones I’ve made, I generally would like to keep them to myself anyway. But yeah, there are two things that I’d already said (in public, sort of) that I’d like to accomplish by the end of the year:

1) find my soul mate
2) make a video that’s viewed by 10000+ people

Let’s see how 2009 goes!

    Hooray for goals!

Seriously, learning to use a sewing machine’s not that hard. I find the hardest part is knowing how much pressure to put on the foot – slightly too much and my machine goes crazy fast. (Although industrial machines are incredibly more scary)

Funnily enough I’m preparing my goal list to publish on my site. But I kind of like your goals better :)

The pressure thing is alright. I tried it on my friend’s sewing machine and did alright (though there’s definitely room for improvement). I find the hardest part to be figuring out where each thread goes and how to set it up. But then, it could become easier if I actually look into it some more.

Goals… Goals are good to a degree. But sometimes, you don’t ever get to the goal, but enjoyed (or hated) the journey anyhow. And sometimes you can also reach your goal and finally realize that it’s not what you wanted. Hehe, you never know. ;-)

Yeah threading is tricky. I bought a new machine earlier last year (OMG, 2008 is ‘last year’ already!) and luckily it has easy arrows to follow on the machine itself, so I never have to worry about finding the manual. It’s quite good actually.

Goals just aren’t me. I don’t do goals or new years resolution, since I usually end up just doing what I feel like at the time. This year though I want to try to get some goals in place and done, if only because I’ve got nothing better to do with my time :)

Reaching a goal and realising it’s not what I wanted? Oh, I do that all the time. Mainly with working on ‘normal’ jobs ;)

That’s convenient. I should get a machine that has a huge arrow that points me to the manual. :-P

I always think “yeah right” when I see people that have a list of 50 goals or resolutions.

I am now considering… if I ever reach my goals, maybe I should hire a soccer/football announcer to go “GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!” in front of me.

Finding your soul mate… that’s sweet. Good luck!

    Happy New Year Kelvin!

You did well with the goals from last year and I am sure you will achieve your goals for 2009. I’ll keep checking for that updated header image! As for the sewing machine, don’t they make fancy computerized machines where you input a pattern and then sit back and let the machine do its magic? That is what I would need.

… Ah, we both need to install threaded commenting :)

I love your idea of arrows pointing to the manual. I put all my manuals in one place so I could remember where they were; now of course, I can’t find them. :P

LOL! I laughed so hard imagining an announcer yelling goal – my work space faces my backyard, so if I had one there’d be plenty of room for large gesturing and arm movements… and then getting bowled over by my dog! :D

Good job at setting goals and meeting quite a few of them! Happy New Year and good luck to you in 2009!

    @Vered: Thanks!

@Derek: You know, I just need a sewing machine that can sew a regular line and is reliable. It’s just like what one of my professor once said after watching car commercials: “You know, I don’t really need a car that accelerates past giant curves into valleys and mountains. All I want is a car that goes straight and can turn left and right when I want it to.”

@Na: Maybe I’ll installed threaded comments when we have 10 different threads going on here… For now, it’s still good as a brain exercise. About the announcer yelling “goal” thing… hm, I wonder if that can be a business… Cheerleaders for hire to cheer you on, and then announcer for hire to yell “gooooooaaaallll!!!!”

@Melissa: Thanks! Happy new year to you as well. :-)

The thing is, do you have a PLAN for finding the soul mate? They can be elusive, yanno. But you can do it! I also think you can do the video. Much more straightforward…;-)

Plan? Not really, hehe. Is that what I need? Oh. :-P
